After many deliberations over the much fraught Long Term Generation Plan of the Ceylon Electricity Board, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed a Committee comprising of six officials to study the plan and revert with a report by June 23.

Highly placed sources told the Daily News that both the Public Utilities Commission and Ceylon Electricity Board Unionists had met the President and Premier separately but failed to come to a mutually agreeable consensus.

“The committee comprises of high ranking officials from the Ministry of National Policies, Power and Renewable Energy as well as experts from the private sector,” sources told the Daily News. “The Committee will study the Generation plan proposed by the CEB and is expected to report back by June 23.”

The Committee will be chaired by K.D.S Ruwanchandra, Secretary to the Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs, Dr. B.M.S Batagoda, Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, Upali Marasinghe, Secretary to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Development, A R Deshapriya Secretary to the Treasury, K.M. Liyanage.

The CEB Engineers Union is currently on a work-to-rule campaign passed a resolution at an Emergency General Meeting yesterday calling on their members to continue their campaign. “It was decided that if the government fails to offer a satisfactory solution including the passage of the Generation Plan put forward by the CEB, we will intensify our strike action.” The CEB Engineers Union is expected to hold an Executive Committee meeting next week, which will decide their next course of action.
