The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has finally forwarded its Long Term Generation Plan to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), meeting an August 1 deadline set by it for the submission of the plan.
The Government had already decided to convert the proposed coal power plant in Sampur into Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). However, with several parties, including the CEB Engineers’ Union (CEBEU) calling for a scientific study to be conducted before deciding on the future of coal, the revised plan contains a mix of both coal and LNG power plants, the Sunday Times learns.

As it is being ranked by Peter Meir the world bank specialist the LTGEP is one of the best plans in the region despite of it’s minor errors. But, unfortunately the politicians in our country do not want to operate according to the plan and they always buckle it instead, with the ulterior moves to add the plants. It is clearly seen that the LTGEP is the only live plan available in Sri Lanka and that is why it is being criticized by all the parties. Where is the National Plan? Where is the Disaster Management Plan? Where is a dengue prevention plan? etc…
The most ridicule thing for CEB is to have it’s own plan in a country which is not accustomed to go with a genuine plan. As a country, we are still not ready to proceed with plans.
